Unlocking the Beauty of NBR Hair Extensions: An Honest Review

Hair Extensions

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a deep desire for long, flowing locks. When it comes to hair extensions, finding the right method and stylist is crucial. After all, you want your hair to look fabulous, but not at the expense of its health. That’s why I decided to give NBR (Natural Beaded Rows) hair extensions a try, and in this honest review, I’ll answer some of the most frequently asked questions about NBR extensions.

What Are NBR Extensions?

Natural Beaded Rows™ Hair Extensions are an exclusive method created by Danielle K. White of DKW Styling. They use 100% human Indian Remy hair, custom-colored to match your hair seamlessly. The extensions are installed in rows using a unique bead and string technique to create a “track.” Wefts are then attached to the track and sewn in, after which they are cut and blended with your natural hair to achieve a flawless look.

Caring for NBR Extensions

Proper care is essential to ensure the longevity and beauty of your NBR extensions. Here are some key maintenance tips to follow:

Washing:

  • Brush out extensions with a wet brush before showering to prevent tangles and matting (using the approved brush is essential).
  • Use sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner.
  • Shampoo gently between rows (dividing the hair into sections).
  • After showering, use a leave-in conditioner and an oil/heat protectant combo before brushing with the approved brush.
  • When brushing wet hair, start at the ends and work your way up to the scalp.
  • Avoid tugging on the extensions with a round brush; use your hands or fingers instead.
  • For drying, use a round brush with light tension to smooth your hair and the extension hair in the final minutes of your blow-dry.
  • When curling, run the extension hair through the curling iron to achieve a polished look and prolong the life of the extension hair.

Sleeping:

  • Brush out extensions before bedtime and tie your hair in a loose ponytail or braids (consider using slip hair ties to prevent matting).
  • Never sleep with wet hair to avoid matting.

Other Tips:

  • Live your normal, active lifestyle with NBR extensions, but handle them gently.
  • Keep the ends hydrated with nourishing hair oil.
  • Avoid letting sunscreen or suntan oil come into contact with the extension hair, especially for blondes, as it can cause discoloration.
  • Excessive use of purple shampoo can turn extensions lavender, so use it sparingly.

Pros & Cons of NBR Hair Extensions

Like any beauty technique, NBR hair extensions come with their own set of advantages and disadvantages:

Pros:

  • Fuller, more voluminous hair with added length.
  • Achieve a natural, lightweight, and comfortable look without the damage associated with traditional extension methods.
  • Long-lasting curls, with minimal touch-ups required after the initial styling.

Cons:

  • The cost of NBR extensions can be significant, and maintenance can be expensive.
  • Ongoing commitment to salon visits every 6-8 weeks for adjustments.
  • Increased time for washing, drying, and styling, although the use of dry shampoo and texturizing spray can help extend the time between washes.

NBR Hair Extensions FAQs

How long do NBR hair extensions last?

  • The duration varies based on hair growth. In my case, they last about 10 weeks before needing adjustment. On average, NBR extensions typically last 6-8 weeks before requiring maintenance, with the hair itself needing replacement after approximately 12 months.

How much do NBR extensions cost?

  • NBR extensions are a financial commitment. The cost varies between salons and stylists, but it’s crucial to have a consultation to discuss your specific needs and get an accurate price estimate. Generally, you can expect to invest between $1,000 and $2,500, which may or may not include additional services such as coloring, cutting, and styling. Be sure to confirm the total cost with your stylist during the consultation.

Do NBR extensions damage your hair?

  • The extent of damage depends on the number of attachment points and how well you care for the extensions. NBR extensions were developed to minimize damage while providing fullness. In my personal experience, I haven’t noticed any damage to my hair. This contrasts with my prior experience with tape-in extensions, which began to damage my hair after just a month. With NBR, there is no glue or tape involved, making it a healthier choice for your hair.

Can you wear your hair up with NBR extensions?

  • Absolutely! Wearing my hair in a high ponytail was essential for me. During the consultation, I showed my stylist how I wear my hair up to ensure that I could achieve this look without the extensions being visible.

Can you wash and style your hair like normal with NBR extensions?

  • Styling your hair with NBR extensions is very similar to your usual routine. While it may take a bit longer, you can wash and style your hair as you did before getting the extensions. NBR extensions don’t limit your hairstyling options.
Do NBR extensions hurt to put in?
  • Having NBR extensions installed is not a painful process. For those who are not particularly sensitive to discomfort, like myself, the procedure is relatively painless. You might experience a slight headache during the first 24-48 hours due to the weight and tightness of the extensions, but it’s manageable and short-lived.
How long does it take to install NBR extensions?
  • One of the significant advantages of NBR extensions is the swift installation process. In my case, the entire process, including color, cut, and styling, took less than 3 hours. This efficiency can be appreciated, especially if you’ve had hair extensions before. When it comes time for adjustments 6-8 weeks later, it takes only about 5 minutes to remove them, as there’s no glue or tape involved. The process then begins anew with the same hair.
Where did you get your extensions done?
  • I had my NBR extensions done by Adriana Martinez at Revel Workshop in Dallas. Adriana has been my trusted hair colorist for nearly 8 years, and she’s the only one I entrust with my hair. I have no intentions of seeking a new stylist in Nashville; my loyalty remains with Adriana.
How many rows and what length did you get?
  • I opted for one row of three 18″ wefts because I wanted lower maintenance and a bit of volume and length. While many people go for two rows of natural beaded row hair extensions, Adriana suggested starting with one row to gauge my satisfaction and adjusting as needed in the future. Personally, I believe one row is ideal for my fine but voluminous hair. If your natural hair is shorter, you may require two rows for a seamless blend. I was fortunate enough to have enough of my hair to blend everything seamlessly.
NBR Hair Extensions Review

Although my experience with Natural Beaded Rows has been relatively short, lasting only 5 weeks, I can wholeheartedly say that I love them. While there are both pros and cons to NBR Hair Extensions, I’ve had a fantastic experience with them, and the benefits outweigh the drawbacks. The journey to achieving the long, beautiful hair I’ve always dreamed of is finally coming to fruition.
